A visit to nearby Salzburg, made famous a generation ago by the movie The Sound of Music and always famous as Mozarts home, attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists each year.
The Zell skyline is distinguished by the outlines of the St. Hippolyt church and the Vogtturm (city tower). Even nonskiers will enjoy the Schmittenhöhe on a clear day when you can see at least thirty 3,000-meter (9,843-foot) or higher peaks in the region.
On Sunday evenings in Kaprun, the tourist office stages folk entertainment and story telling around a bonfire within the ruins of an old fortress. Youll en-joy the music, though the stories are in German.
At Kaprun, visit the Gothic Pfarrkirche in the middle of town and the castle ruins, even if youre not there for the storytelling and music.
The Kaprun Optimum with an indoor and outdoor swimming pool and fitness center is packed with fitness-minded Europeans and is a great place to meet other skiers. The pool is open from 11 a.m.10 p.m. Entrance is €7.40 for adults. The pool sauna costs €12.60 per session.

There is an illuminated toboggan run from Jausenstation Guggenbichl, Kaprun and one in Zell am See from Gasthof Köhlergraben.
For ice-skating head to the Sports and Leisure Center (785) in Zell am See or at the small natural ice skating place in Kaprun. But for a fantastically picturesque experience, try skating on the frozen Lake Zell.
For a fine selection of Austrian crafts and ceramics stop in at Hierner & Co. Stadt-platz 6, Zell am See. For souvenirs there are a plenty of choices in the village.
