Here is an interactive Val Thorens trail map.

Even with the high altitude of Val Thorens, one of the biggest capital improvements has been the continued installation of snowmaking. Though this resort gets plenty of snow, the strong sun during the spring makes snowmaking on the southern-facing slopes desirable. It is one more example of the region trying to make the skiing experience as good as possible.

As the highest resort in the Alps, Val Thorens is wide-open, bowl-type skiing above treeline. The Péclet cablecar takes skiers up to the glacier with winter skiing for intermediates and above. While most of the skiing in the bowl-shaped area is intermediate and advanced, experts can find plenty of challenges.

The cablecar ride to the top of Cîme de Caron, the highest point in the three valleys, is spectacular if you are lucky enough to be blessed with clear weather and limited winds. The view alone is worth the trip. From here you can take a black run straight down or a slightly easier advanced intermediate. True experts will want to ski over the ridge to the little-used fourth valley and then take the Rosael quad chair that will bring you back. There are some newly developed trails in this valley with a new chairlift just added. When skiing Val Thorens be ready for changeable weather. At this altitude the winds can pick up in an instant and clouds can move in quickly. Dress for winter conditions, even if the skies are clear and the sun strong when you leave the base area for Cime Caron.

If you want to explore the rest of Les Trois Vallées, hop on the Funitel Bouquetin, a lift which has been specifically designed to transport skiers between Val Thorens and the rest of Les Trois Vallées even in bad weather conditions.

Mountain rating
No one will have any problem finding the perfect skiing for their level. Beginners will be able to stick close to the village. Intermediates will have the run of all the slopes surrounding the town. Advanced and expert skiers will have off-piste opportunities and plenty of steeps to challenge them.
