In Ortisei: Head to Adler (0471-775000; €€€) one of the best, in the center of town; Genziana-Enzian (0471-796246; €€€); Grien (0471-796340; €€+); Hell (0471-796785; €€); Cavallino Bianco Family Spa Grand Hotel (0471-783333; €€€; photo above), right in the middle of town. La Perla (0471-796421; €€; photo below) is our favorite in the area—beautiful and a bit out of town, but there’s bus service to the lifts and a pool. Then there's Gardena (0471-796315; €€€); Villa Luise (0471-796498; €€) with 13 rooms, which is out-of-the-way but has panoramic views. Lastly, try Cosmea (0471-796464; €) or Stua Catores (0471-796682; €) which was recently renovated and a bit out of the way, but has local flavor.

Far above Ortisei in the tiny dorf (village) of Bulla the 10-room Charme Hotel Uhrerhof-Deur (0471-797335; €€) provides a quiet and affordable retreat with wonderful views above the town and a great kitchen open only to guests. Also in Bulla, Sporthotel Platz (0471-796935; €) is a great bargain also in Bulla with beautiful views. This is a perfect spot for cross-country skiers and walkers.

Hotel Chalet Portillo photo, Val Gardena, ItalyIn Selva Gardena: The best are Hotel Tyrol (0471-774100; €€€), Genziana (0471-772800; €€€) with a great restaurant, or Alpenroyal Sporthotel (0471-795555, €€€). The next level is Gran Baita (0471-795210; €€) and Hotel Chalet Portillo (0471-795205; €€€; photo right). Then head to Mignon (0471-795092; €€) or Laurin (0471-795105; €€). The least expensive, but still Michelin-rated is the quiet Pozzamanigoni (0741-794138; €) which is somewhat out of the way. All of these hotels are excellent—it just depends on the level of service you demand. For an inexpensive B&B try the Eden and Somont.

In S. Cristina: Try the Diamant (0471-796780; €€€), Interski (0471-793460; €€), Sporthotel Maciaconi (0471-793500; €€), or Villa Martha (0471-792088; €).
