The interconnected Dolomite Superski lift system, with 450 lifts, reaches more than 1,200 km. of prepared slopes, and hundreds of kilometers of off-piste skiing through rocky crags and spectacular mountain scenery. Seceda, directly above Ortisei, is the highest elevation on the lift system in the Gardena region at 7,740 feet.
Perhaps the biggest draw for the region, besides the panoramic views, is the Sella Ronda, a 26-km. section of interconnected runs, which allow you to ski around the Sella mountain group. This full-day expedition involves visiting eight different ski areas. The runs are well marked and the Sella Ronda can be skied either clockwise or counterclockwise. Any reasonably competent skier can complete the basic circuit. Better skiers will find many opportunities for adventurous detours.
The major requirement for doing the entire Sella Ronda in one day is stamina. Intermediates should allow about 5-1/2 to 6-1/2 hours of skiing time, starting early enough to get back over the last passes before the lifts close from 4 p.m.5 p.m. If you are planning to do the Sella Ronda, the best day according to locals is Saturday, when most vacationers are either leaving or arriving.
Snowboarding is allowed on all of the Val Gardena slopes, but boarders will probably be happiest on Piz Sella or the Alpe di Siusi.
Cross-country skiers will find a paradise up on the Alpe di Siusi, one of Europes highest Alpine meadows with an altitude ranging from 6,500 to 7,150 feet.
Mountain rating
Judged solely on the extensiveness of its skiing opportunities, this area might be considered one of the best. However, expert skiers will have to go off-piste for real excitement. While there are some hair-raising runs above Selva Gardena and S. Cristina, experts in search of off-trail action should hire the services of a good guide. Try the Sassolungo or the Passo Pordoi at your own risk. If you decide to go without a guide, be sure to check in with the ski school for a word about your proposed route, snow conditions and avalanche warnings.
The intermediate and the beginner will find ample suitable terrainwhen skiers tire of one area, they can just head over to another for variety. The Alpe di Siusi above Ortisei is a beginners paradise.
