For an authentic Ladin meal, head off to the Stua Catores (0471-796682) on Sacunstrasse 47 in Ortisei. The food is hearty and the atmosphere rustic and unpretentious. Don’t be afraid to ask among the restaurant patrons for someone who speaks English and can help you with the menu selection. Another typical Ladin restaurant is Tubladel in Str. Trebinger 22.

Some of our suggestions are crafuncins, a type of ravioli; panicia, a barley soup with a type of bacon; jufa, a puréed version of polenta; patac cun craut, potatoes and sauerkraut; anes enzucredes, pancakes with anise and sugar; ribl da furmenton, a buckwheat pancake; bales da furmenton, a buckwheat dumpling; and crafons for dessert.

Concordia Romstr. 41, Ortisei (0471-796276; photo above) for ravioli in truffle sauce and game. This restaurant gets two forks from Michelin and has affordable daily menus.

Restaurant Cascade, Str. Promeneda 1/1, Ortisei (0471-786465) serves traditional meals and pizza. Its vinotheque has a good and varied choice of wine.

Restaurant Anna Stuben in Hotel Gardena, Vidalongstr., Ortisei (0471-796315).

Mar Dolomit Str. Promeneda 2, Ortisei (0471-797352) has local and traditional Italian specialties with an open wood-fired pizza oven.

Mesavia (0471-796299) and Vedl Mulin (0471-796089) have an excellent mix of Germanic and Italian food and are reasonably priced.

In Selva Gardena try:
Hotel Tyrol Str. Puez 12 (0471-774100) has won prizes for its local fare.

Armins Grillstube Str. Mëisules 161 (0471-795347) has great lamb.

Des Alpes Stuben Str. Mëisules 157 (0471-72700) is somewhat upscale and has chateaubriand and fondues.

Gérard Str. Plan de Gralba 37 (0471-795274) has a Michelin fork and is noted for its very affordable daily menus. The views of the Sassolungo are awe inspiring.

For fondue and cheese dishes try Gardenia, Dorfer (0471-795204) or Olympia (0471-795145).
