The tourist office and the hoteliers have organized special weekly discount programs or-ganized for low and shoulder season periods. Costs for the pro-gram are based on the hotel category and the package being offered. Packages include seven nights accommodation with bath or shower, seven-day lift ticket and pool pass. For instance, during mid January, a four-star hotel package will be €169 per person each day for half board; a three-star package is €126 per person each day for half boardboard; a two-star will cost €102 per person each day for half board and the one-star hotel package is only €88 per person each day for half board.

Hotel Grand Paradis (479 06 11 73; €€€+; photo above) is a three-star hotel with one of the best locations in the resort—just across the street from the lifts—plus, underground parking. The hotel’s beautiful 36 rooms, four suites and Le Schuss restaurant have all benefited from their recent renovations.

Hotel Maeva Latitudes (479 06 18 88; €€€+) is a four-star establishment in the village center that has a sauna, gym and two restaurants that serve traditional local fare.

Hotel Christiania (479 06 08 25; €€€) is a chalet-style, four-star hotel two minutes from the lifts and full of atmosphere. The suites available on the top floor are among the best in the resort, with beautiful bathrooms and antique country furniture.

Hotel Mercure (479 06 12 93; €€) is a three-star modern hotel in the center of the village—the perfect business hotel—clean, convenient and efficient.

Hotel La Savoyarde (479 06 01 55; €€€; photo above left) This is our favorite hotel in Val d’Isère. This three-star is chalet-style and has a cozy sauna and spacious restaurant. Its best feature is its location in the center of town only steps away from the lifts.

Hotel Samovar (479 06 13 51; €€–€€€) is oozing with charm. This hotel is out of the town center facing the funicular. Its restaurant is consistently rated as one of the best in town. Rooms are weathered but comfortable. The owner says he wants to create the atmosphere of a chalet rather than a hotel. Ask for room 10—an Old World, old wood masterpiece. The buffet breakfast is sumptuous.

Hotel Les Sorbiers (479 06 23 77; €€€; photo below) is a beautiful three-star hotel built in modern chalet style in the center of the resort. The interiors are rich with golden wood and rooms are cozy with nice views of either the mountains or the village. The hotel offers only B&B arrangements.

Hotel Altitude (479 06 12 55; €€) This hotel has one of the coziest restaurants of any hotel in the village.

Chamois d’Or (479 06 00 44; €€) is a two-star hotel is filled with old Alpine charm. The restaurant has a giant fireplace. Rooms vary in size, but all have ample space. The hotel is only steps away from the cable cars up to the Solaise and the Bellevarde. If you want atmosphere, this is the place.

For a quiet change of pace outside of the town try Le Chalet du Lac (479 06 25 47; €–€€), a new hotel alongside the lake a few kilometers outside of La Daille. This hotel offers, for those with a car, a position between Tignes and Val d‘Isère.

Hotel Barmes de l’Ours (475 41 37 00; €€€+) is a four-star luxury hotel at the bottom of La Face, complete with indoor swimming pool and one of the largest spas in the Alps

The tourist office maintains an extensive list of individuals and agencies who will rent apartments in the resort.

Aparthotels combine apartments with hotel service. The most elegant of these new establishments are the Les Domaines du Soleil which has a swimming pool. Two similar aparthotels are Les Chalets du Jardin Alpin (479 06 75 00, fax 479 41 75 01; photo left) and Eureka Val (479 41 57 00, fax 479 06 16 67). The Alpina Lodge (479 41 60 00, fax 479 41 14 55) also offers similar arrangements. Apartment prices are about €230–€762 for a studio in mid January and €495–€1,319 for a two-room apartment during the same period. In February and early March rates junp to €345–€1,020 for a studio sleeping two to four and €926–€2,324 for a two-room unit which will sleep five to six. In many cases, linen is not included but can be rented for the week from the apartment owners or agencies.
