Mountain Layout Snowboarding
Intermediate to expert snowboarders will be more than satisfied with Tignes. With the majority of runs above tree level, the trails in Tignes are wide and bordered by easily accessible off-piste terrain. For those who buy the Espace Killy lift ticket, the backside of Col de Fresse in the Val dIsère section supplies a natural off-piste terrain park. For serious shredders craving some of the best backcountry in the Alps, there are ample treks and traverses leading to intense chutes and powder fields well worth hiking for. Of course, Avalanche Victim Locators are required for any serious off-piste excursions. Evolution 2 Ski and Snowboard School provides the best guides for backcountry; a half day is €50 and four half days are €175. Unfortunately, Tignes is not the best resort for never-ever or beginner boarders. They officially list only one green run in the entire Tignes area, compared with a total of twenty greens in Espace Killy.
The snowpark itself, largest in the world, is a reason to go to Tignes. Covering 1,600 vertical feet, the 2-1/2-km.-long park sports a quarterpipe and halfpipe, a boardercross course and a plethora of table-tops for skiers and boarders alike. The best riders in Europe come to Tignes to compete and practice.
During the summer and early winter before the park above Tignes le Lac is built, head up to the La Grande Motte, where another half-pipe and more tabletops are kept in shape year around.
