St. Moritz, Switzerland

Yes, when you have visited all the other great resorts, when you have enjoyed the other hotels claiming to pamper guests to the extreme, when you’ve seen all the mountains said to be grand and great, then and only then: journey to St. Moritz.

You’ll find that though there is elegance and Alpine beauty everywhere in Switzerland, nowhere is it concentrated in such huge amounts as here on the rooftop of Europe, St. Moritz, the original Swiss winter resort. Each night at dinner at the Hotel Schweizerhof it is great theater to observe the maitre d’hotel greet guests in German, French and English. After speaking with you once, he always addresses you in your native language.

In winter the great expanse of snow-covered lake provides a massive, scenic foreground for the celebrated town whose name is a synonym for quality and lux-ury. The most elegant aspect of St. Moritz—the great hotels—are expensive, but everything else, restaurants included, is there for nearly everyone.

The tourist office claims the sun shines 322 days a year in St. Moritz; in the winter this sunlight brightens some 250 miles of downhill ski runs, 100 miles of cross-country ski trails, 30 curling rinks, horse races, polo and cricket on the frozen lake, the Cresta and bobsled runs, an Olympic ski jumping hill and much more.

The central area, St. Moritz Dorf, is compact, really only two main streets with a few side streets and a single small main square. Movies are up-to-date, nightlife superb, moonlight strolls on the lake wonderful. The entertainment fits every pocketbook and taste. St. Moritz Bad, the less built-up section and ancient health spa, curls around the western end of the frozen lake.
