Cross-Country and snowshoeing
So much terrain, so little time! Ski on any of the 180 km of trails cutting across the landscape of the Upper Engadine lake plateau as well as leading into its many romantic side valleys or if you prefer, glide along Engadine's illuminated night trails. Engadine is famous for its racing trails and for the Engadin Ski Marathon, a 42-km race that is held annually on the second Sunday of March. So if you're up for the challenge, the event is open to the public. For more information call 081 850 55 55.
The trails are groomed for both skate and classic cross-country skiing and there are ample dressing -rooms and heated wax.
Skiiers can buy passes and badges from cashiers along the trails, Holiday resort ENGADIN and the Cross-country ski schools. A one day pass costs €6.. If you are vacationing for a longer period of time and wish to obtain the Engadine cross-country badge, you can do so for €23.
Detailed maps of the trails are available for €3 at hotels and cross-country ski schools. We highly recommend purchasing one as the area has over 40 marked trails split between 4 sections:
Maloja - Sils - Silvaplana - St.Moritz
St.Moritz - Celerina - Pontresina
Pontresina - Samedan - Bever - La Punt Chamues-ch
La Punt Chamues-ch - Madulain - Zuoz - S-chanf - Zernez
Snowshoeing
Engadin has 150 km of winter hiking trails that are also excellent for snowshoeing.
Schellen Ursli Trail
The Schellenursli trail leads off the Hotel Salastrains passing the "Heidihütte" (Heidi's hut) and ends at Via Tinus in St. Moritz. The length of the trail is 1.5 km and a leisurely stroll will take about 45 minutes.
Philosophers' Trail
Along the romantic and quiet trail crossing the plateau of Muottas Muragl you can read quotes from Socrates to Sartre on pannels gracing the unrivalled landscape.
Segantini Trail
Start at the hotel Soldanella, then follow the forest trail to the renovated Segantini Museum and beyond towards Suvretta. Bordering the trail, six information boards are outlining the life of the world famous painter Giovanni Segantini.
Around the Lake of St. Moritz
A very special hike, as the frozen lake of St. Moritz stays within your field of view. Just think of how strong the layer of ice has to be in order to withstand horse races, polo parties, grandstands and hundreds of spectators at one time.
