St. Johann in Tirol along with Oberndorf, Kirchdorf and Erpfendorf, is a part of the Ferienrgion valley area known as the Holiday Region.
St. Johann in Tirol in winter is a Tyrolean resort town just far enough from the lifts to keep locals aware of the need to welcome visitors with a smile. The town is afloat in a sea of snow, lending a special atmosphere to a place that cant decide whether it is a resort village or a valley town.
Here is the St. Johann in Tirol town map in pdf format.
Although St. Johann is only 2,297 feet above sea level, the snowfall here is certain and heavy from Christmas to March. That, together with north-facing slopes, pleases serious skiers. The setting is picturesque, with the familiar outline of the Kitzbüheler Horn forming part of the panorama. Kitzbühel is about 9.6 km. away.
The typical Tyrolean hotels here are large and have a deserved reputation for the hospitality which is sometimes missing in bigger, better known resorts. At night youll know immediately from the lower decibel levels that this is not a party town. The streets dont exactly fold up at 8 p.m., but the nightlife is quieter.
The region has an excellent shuttlebus system that links hotels and apartments with the town and the lifts and all the villages in the valley.
St. Johann is the shopping center for the region and caters to lots of locals as well as the tourists who come to ski. The mix of visitors is fairly well balanced between British, Germans, Dutch and Swedes. It creates a real international atmosphere that adds to the vacation.
One of the years biggest events is the Tiroler Koasalauf, an in-ternational cross-country race staged in mid-February. It begins at the Koasa Stadium cross-country center in St. Johann. The event has its own Web site at www.koasalauf.at. St. Johann in Tirol and its holiday region offer more than 275 km. of cross-country runs.
