Schladming and Ramsau with Dachstein-Tauern Region, Austria

This is the area in Europe where Arnold Schwarzenegger comes to ski, but more on that later.

Whether you are looking for the challenge of the fastest World Cup downhill or wide beginner and in-termediate runs through thick pine forests; whether you seek the excitement of skiing on the Dachstein Glacier or the serenity of one of the most extensive cross-coun-try areas in Austria, it’s all in Schladming.

Here is the Ramsau am Dachstein city map in pdf format.

Schladming, in the center of Austria about an hour’s drive from Salzburg, hosts thousands of Austrian, German, Swedish, Danish, British and Dutch tourists. Already one of the leading va-cation centers for the Austrians, the region has completed an extensive series of developments that have turned the valley into a world-class resort. The local term for this area is Sportregion Schladming Dachstein-Tauern.

Schladming, the hub of the area, is nestled around a old town center, with shop-ping, nightlife and restaurants—all within a five-minute walk from the main lifts.

Rohrmoos, about a five-minute drive up the mountain, features more hotel rooms than Schladming, and guests can step out their door, put on their skis and set off down the mountain. But Rohrmoos is spread out and a long walk from the Schladming village.

Ramsau lies on the opposite side of the valley, with a southern exposure. It is settled on a long plateau that features some of the most interest-ing cross-country skiing in Austria: the 1999 Nordic World Championships were held here. Accommodations are extensive but dispersed. At the top of the Dachstein cable car (elevation 8,850 feet) you overlook the entire Schladminger Taurern region mountain range and the Enns River Valley. Haus im Ennstal, a short drive along the valley from Schladming, is perhaps the most picturesque of the main villages in the region. It remains traditional, anchoring the Hauser Kaibling ski area.

The Schladming Dachstein Tauern ski pass also allows skiing in the Gasteiner Valley, Hochkönigs and Grossarltal. That brings the total available skiing and riding option in the region to 270 lifts covering 860 km. of trails. Though the lifts are not interconnected, there is a shuttlebus system that links the various resorts as well as parking at each resort.
