The best restaurant in the region is the Fletschhorn (027-957-2131; fax 027-957-2187), a 30-minute walk from town or a 10-minute taxi ride. It is considered one of the best in Switzerland and features nouvelle cuisine. The 2007 Chef of the Year award was given to the Waldhotel Fletschhorn and it also received its 18th Gault & Millau point. Make reservations early. Meals will range from €85€115.
Perhaps the second-best eatery is the Hohnegg (027-957-2268; photo right), just about a 10-minute walk above the town (or call for its taxi service). Also nouvelle cuisine in a Swiss country atmosphere. It features a daily menu selection starting at less than €15.
Le Mandarin Thai restaurant in the Ferienart Resort and Spa (027-958-1900) serves Asian cuisine for €30€60. The Italian restaurant in the same hotel, Del Ponte (photo below) is highly recommended with meals from €25€55 and pizzas for only €10€13.
For excellent traditional local Walliser food try the Golfhotel Saaserhof and the Schäferstube. For cheese and Swiss specialties the top recommendations are the Käse-Keller (027-957-2120) and the Arvu-Stuba (027-957-2747).
For good, less expensive meals, try the Hotel Allalin (027-957-1815)a rebuilt 300-year-old room with wooden beams and hand-carved chairs that make it magical by candlelight; Hotel Dom (027-957-5101) for great rösti. La Gorge (027-958-1680) and Du Glacier (027-958-1600) also have excellent fondue and raclette. Chüestall has various steaks (027 958 91 60).
For pizza, try the restaurant Spaghetteria da Rasso or La Ferme under the Hotel Beau-Site, or the Boccalino, in front of the Saaserhof. Pizza or pasta is €10€13.
On the slopes, have at least one lunch in the revolving restaurant on the Allalin. The prices are down to earth. The mountain restaurant Berghaus Plattjen Terminus, is great for a late lunch when the area catches the sun. It has great rösti.
The mountain restaurant Meeting-Point Morenia, at 2, 500 meters next to the Alpin Express and Snowpark serves a wide variety of foods buffet-style.
On the opposite side along the Längfluh run, where it meets the Gletschergrotte trail cutting off from the Kanonenrohr, is the Gletscher-Grotte, which catches sun most of the day.
A good lunch with beer and coffee at most spots on the mountain costs €15€18. Fondue is about €24 and a normal three-course dinner will be about €24.
In Saas Grund try the Hotel Dom (027-957-2233) for magical setting and very affordable meals.
