Alpenhotel (6666; €€€) This is Saalbach’s flagship hotel. The big red arch dominates the entrance of the village and an-nounces that the Alpenhotel caters to all whims—sauna, solarium, massage, exercise room, indoor swimming pool, whirlpool and so on. It also houses the most exclusive disco in Saalbach, the Arena.

Haider (6228; €€€) Not as fancy or as large as the Alpenhotel, the Haider is quaint in the traditional Austrian mold, with carved wood headboards on the beds and shutters. There’s a sauna, so-larium and a hot whirlpool, as well a hideaway lounge with fireplace. Besides an excellent restaurant serving traditional Austrian fare, there’s also an informal pizze-ria—always a plus for carbo-hungry skiers.

Sporthotel Ellmau (72260; €€€) and Hotel Glemmtalerhof (7135; €€€) in Hinterglemm are excellent and offer full amenities, such as sauna, solarium and indoor swimming pool. There’s also babysitting on the premises.

The upscale Wellness-Hotel-Kendler (62250, fax 6335; €€€; photo above) in Saalbach, is packed with health facilities, saunas, steambaths, fitness room and spa.

Scharnagl (6284, fax 6284 20; €–€€) is too new to rate as quaint. This pension scores high because of its location next to the old church and across the street from both the Kohlmais gondola and the Bauer’s Schi-Alm, perhaps the best après-ski bar in town. The rooms are clean and airy, and the proprietress, Frau Brudermann, is always willing to help. It is the best après-ski bar in town.

Another recommended pension in Saalbach is the Berger (7140; €). In Hinterglemm, try the Flora (7100; €).

Saalbach has hundreds of apartments for rent with two major agencies handling the procedure. Contact either of the two agencies or the tourist office for apartment information. Give them your arrival and departure dates and level of luxury you desire.
