Megève, France

Megève exudes old-fashioned charm with narrow streets, small squares, trendy boutiques, quality antique shops, crowded bistros, dozens of small hotels, even an old-style bakery wafting the fragrance of fresh bread through the town square.

The small village is huddled around the old church, a medieval tower and the town hall. The upper crust of Europe and especially France make Megève their winter home when cold weather forces them to abandon the Riviera. Furs are the coats of choice for strolling past shop windows. The latest fashions are found on the slopes during the day, in expensive gourmet restaurants and some of France’s best discos and nightclubs after dark. You can spend your nights bouncing to the beat in packed jazz clubs or wandering the romantic streets listening to the jingle of bells and the clip-clop of horses.

Like Zermatt, Megève has a look that Walt Disney might have imagined had he created a ski resort. The atmosphere is almost storybook: From its Old World town build-ings to its narrow streets, from its art deco deluxe hotels to its perfect French country inns, and from its gourmet restaurants to its pulsing late-night casinos and discos. Megève hits all the notes between hedonistic excess and traditional ski village delight.

For skiers, Megève’s own ski area is relatively unin-spiring, but the town has leveraged its ambi-ance with the slopes of neighboring towns, creating an area with exceptional variety of terrain. It links the slopes of neighboring Saint-Gervais-les-Bains, St. Nicolas de Véroce, Les Contamines, La Giettaz and Combloux. There’s something for every level of skier with an overall skiing domain of almost 278 miles of trails including 43 km. of cross-country pistes.
