One of the jewels of the Brenta Dolomites in Trentino is Madonna di Campiglio.
This resort has become Italys largest resort in terms of beds, runs and lifts.
Here is the Madonna di Campiglio resort map.
The town has grown significantly. Whereas downtown Madonna was once where the hotels were concentrated, growth has given Madonna thousands of new rooms in the Palu section and above in the Campo Carlo Magno. These new hotels, especially those in the far reaches of Palu, are a bit of a walk from the lifts which remain centered around the original village. The hotels at Campo Carlo Magno have good lift service but are separated from downtowns shopping and nightlife.
The Brenta massif is typified by wild limestone rock formations and multicolored rocks that are as stark and beautiful during the winter as they are in the summer. These mountains, just like those in the sister Dolomites across the Adige River, have to be seen to be believed. They are truly castles and fortifications built by God. The Val di Genova is one of the most beautiful in the region and is only minutes from Madonna di Campiglio. When the road is open, a trip up to the 300-foot-high Nardis waterfalls is worth the effort.
The Campo Carlo Magno gets its name from a reported visit from Charlemagne while he was Holy Roman Emperor. Today it is part of the extended lift ticket area. The Great Rock (Pietra Grande) is impressive.
