Lillehammer was the site of the 1994 Winter Olympic Games.
The town got a lot of press and TV coverage. Lost, however, was the fact that the downhill ski and snowboard slopes are not located in or even near the small city. Lillehammer served as the base for the Olympics and the media focus, but for Alpine skiing or riding, a car or bus ride is necessary to get to the distant slopes.
Here is the Lillehammer town map.
The two resorts, Hafjell and Kvitfjell (fjell means mountain), are outside of Lillehammer. Hafjell is about a 20-minute trip and Kvitfjell is around 45 minutes from Lillehammer. Though the downhill facilities are not in the town of Lillehammer, combining these two resorts means the region has 40 lifts and 80 downhill runs.
Plus there are more than 1,500 km. of cross-country trails around Lillehammer, across the top of Hafjell and through the woods bordering Kvitfjell. These trails never end. Intrepid cross-country skiers can head over to the North Sea or back to Oslo.
One Norwegian Krone is worth about 17¢. Or, US$1 = NOK6.
