Hotel Mercure (479 09 12 09; fax 479 09 29 52; €–€€) Overall the atmosphere in Belle Plagne makes Mercure's location desirable, but what one gains in atmosphere one loses in choice of restaurants and shops. If you are a single and someone tells you that there will be no supplement, beware. “Half rooms” for singles with no supplement mean you share a shower and toilet with another unfortunate half-roomer.

Hotel Les Alpes in Aime (479 09 70 24; €) This small hotel only has 14 rooms.

The new Chalet/Hotel Les Montagnettes (479 55 12 00; fax 479 55 12 19; €€) in Belle Plagne has some wonderful apartments with more space than the older apartments in Plagne Centre. This is an upscale choice in the region.

In the villages there are two-star hotels. Hotel l’Ancolie (479 55 05 00; fax 479 55 04 42; €–€€; photo above) in Champagny has a great location right at the base of the cable car. Les Glières (479 55 05 52; fax 479 55 04 84; €-€€; photo below) is also in Champagny. Hotel Bellecote (479 07 83 30; fax 479 07 80 63; €) in Montchavin has rooms by the week. Hotel l’Aigle Rouge (479 55 51 05; fax 479 55 51 14; €) in Plagne Montalbertis a good value. Children normally get a 30 to 50 percent discount in most hotels.

Apartments are by far the most popular form of ac-commodation in La Plagne. There are more than 20 times the number of apartment beds than hotel beds. Accommodations range from tiny 17-square-meter rooms to spacious quarters. Two can make it without any trouble in a normal two-person French apartment, but will be much more comfortable if they can afford to rent a place advertised for four. In Belle Plagne, a studio or one-bedroom apartment with plenty of room for two will run €255–€300 a week in January. There are also bargain weekly rates starting from only €210 per person, including ski lifts, lessons and equipment rental discounts (if more people share) in January. Such rates are hard to beat. For information call 479 09 79 79.
