Ischgl (pronounced Ish-gull) is an extensive ski resort high in the Alps (4,592 feet), on the border with Switzerland is almost unknown by non-Europeans.
If you like the charm of truly being on an European vacation, this valley is perfect.
Here is the interactive Ischgl city map.
The town itself is a small Alpine resort built on a knoll in a deep valley, and is easily walkable from one end to the other, thanks to elevators and short-cut tunnels. No high-rise construction seriously mars the small village effect. The ski area is far above and out of sight from the road, the base stations and the town. Eleven smaller hamlets complete the region.
Ischgl has it all40 lifts, more than 230 km. of wide trails, cross-border skiing runs into Switzerland, off-trail areas, cross-country, Alpine village atmosphere, inviting local cuisine, both luxury and affordable lodging options, and some of the wildest après-ski and nightlife in Austria. There is so much fun to be had in Ischgl we recommend resting up before you go. Be forewarned, nearly 50 percent of Ischgls skiers are from Germany, so if you want to meet people, it helps to speak some German.. If thats not an option, youll fit in if you just practice dancing in your ski boots.
With 90 percent of its ski area over 6,600 feet, snow is virtually assured until the beginning of May. From the slopes above Ischgl, you can cross into Switzerland and visit duty-free Samnaun.
Twenty minutes up the valley is Galtür, a picturesque village of only 730 inhabitants and 20 restaurants, which is spread out around a late-baroque church. Although connected to Ischgl by bus (and the Silvretta ski pass), its much smaller and quieter with a correspondingly smaller ski area (40 km. of runs). It is particularly known for its cross-country and ski-touring opportunities. Since Galtür is the highest village in the Silvretta-Paznaun region, it has a long snow season (December to April).
Generation after generation has been drawn to Galtür by its quiet charms and unhurried pace. Families will find the resort caters to their needs.
