Cross-Country

With 146 kilometers (91 miles) of well-groomed trails to do their laps on, cross-country sports enthusiasts will also get their money’s worth in Innsbruck’s skiing region. Here, cross-country skiing is both a tour of the holiday villages around Innsbruck and a commune with nature as you enjoy the unspoiled landscape. The eye-level views of the surrounding mountains when moving along the 4.5 km (2.8 miles) track at the Stubai Glacier and the 3.5 km long (2.2 miles) one in the Schlick 2000 are magnificent. On the plateaus of the lower mountains overlooking Innsbruck, the cross-country regions Rinn, Natters and Axams offer a total of about 56 kilometres (35 miles) of tracks, partly covered with artificial snow to ensure perfect conditions.

However, if you long for altitude, there are numerous trails on higher ground too, for instance in Oberperfuss, in Kühtai and in St. Sigmund-Praxmar, where the trails run along the romantic Mellach stream to the head of the valley at the foot of the glacier, the Lüsener Ferner. And if you prefer to reach even higher heights, try out Kühtai at 2,020 metres (6,700 feet) above sea level.

At an altitude of 1,640 metres (5,300 feet), Lüsens in the Sellraintal valley is about 45 minutes from Innsbruck in a high mountain pass, with about 15.5 km. (9.7 miles) of trails, groomed in two basic loops. The longer loop encircles a lake and passes through woods and the shorter begins at the nearby downhill ski area. Both offer beautiful high mountain scenery but no real backcountry or wilderness travel. It is also hard to lose the crowd. A couple of good inns make handy lunch stops. Trails are well-groomed and the lake loop can offer some thrills for advanced beginners and intermediates.

The daily cross-country ski-bus gives the guest the possibility to explore different trails around Innsbruck.
