Lodging
In the town of Hemsedal, the Norlandia Skogstad Hotell (left; 32055000), right on the main street, is consider to be the best hotel, but the hotel full-board meals are passable at best. There is a pub and disco. If staying on the weekend, ask for a room away from the nightlife noise.
Perched on a rock outcropping, with spectacular views is the Skarsnuten Hotel (right; 32061700) set in a small village reached by a toll road or chair lift. The rooms are simple and modern. Prices (per person double occupancy with full pension) range from NOK1,200 midweek to NOK1,500 on weekends. The common area and restaurant are exceptional. The hotel also has a collection of cozy apartments. Scarsnuten Fjellandsby (32055060) condominiums, in the same mountain village, are excellent as well.
Most of the other nearby accommodations are aparthotels. Rooms are clean and modern. Rogjin Apartments and Hemsedal Resort Fjellandsby (right; 32055060) have a collection of condominiums near the base area. The Molla Sportell (32055060) is a collection of 56 cabins at the base of the lifts.
About 30 minutes from Hemsedal, up a winding dirt road, Harahorn (right; 32062380) is an exclusive resort hotel that is more suited to a quiet private retreat, a family getaway or a corporate meeting. It is an elegant collection of 20 small authentic farmhouses that have been brought to the mountain complex. The oldest building is centuries old with a sod roof. The central building has the dining room and several guest rooms. Otherwise visitors stay in the old houses, which have been beautifully restored and modernized. The meals are considered by the locals to be exquisite.
