Fortunately, the lift-ticket confusion is not carried over into accommodations. You can quickly find a place to stay, anywhere from a farmhouse or an ultra-luxurious hotel.

The tourist office offers a series of inclusive one-week vacation plans that combine hotel, lifts and local transportation. Prices range from about €300 for a room in a private home without private bath, to €664 for lodging in a luxury hotel.

Hotel Sonnenbichel (7020; fax 702131; photo below right) and the Dorint Resort & Spa Hotel (7060; fax 706618) are considered by many to be the best in town. But these international hotels are are out of town and lose much of the Bavarian flavor of a vacation in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

Visitors should try to take advantage of the wonderful hotels in the middle of the towns. These lodges are full of atmosphere and will provide a memorable vacation.

Hotel Schell (95750; fax 957540) €23–€46, is a B&B that is very close to the station. None of the rooms have baths so guests share one down the hall.

Apartments
The popularity of apartments has increased in Garmisch in recent years. The Garmisch-Partenkirchen tourist office provides an accommodations booklet, which not only lists available apartments but also includes pictures of some of them. Of those we saw the most interesting were the apartments in the Husar section with furnished apartments for two to six people. Prices start at €30 a day and range up to more than €120 a day. Once again, check to make sure you are near to buses for transport to the slopes and within easy walking distance of the town for nightlife and dining.
