Flims Laax Falera, the Alpenarena, is still one of the undiscovered ski areas in Switzerland as far as American and British skiers are concerned.

The ski area, in the southeast part of Switzerland across the valley from Arosa, was discovered by the Swiss and the Germans, who know a good area when they see it. Nevertheless, in recent years it seems more and more British are discovering the area. The Alpenarena enjoys excellent British and American ski club patronage and the recent 2005 British Ski and Snowboard Freestyle Championship was held here.

Flims is a small village in the traditional sense. The ski lifts start from the village center (about 3,600 feet altitude) and the major hotels are spread throughout the village. Laax, a couple of kilometers down the road, has built a new part with various hotels and apartments, at the base of the Crap Sogn Gion cable car. Not only are the major hotels centered here but also the major nightlife. The more traditional and historic part of Laax with restaurants, hotels, the sport center and the museum is based around a lake a few kilometers away.

Falera, the third and smallest village in the Alpenarena, has only one hotel but various apartments to rent.

Flims is perhaps the more Swiss; Laax is a purer ski vacation experience; Falera is best suited for those who want skiing and solitude.

It is hard to describe the incredible expanse of ski area that surrounds a skier as he or she gazes from the station at the top of the Crap Sogn Gion cable car that rises from Laax. This is a wide-open area that cries out for all-day skiing.
