Engelberg is sunny most of the year. The biggest non-skiing pursuits are hiking and sightseeing.
Engelberg has a sports center with indoor and outdoor ice skating, indoor tennis courts, a fitness center, a curling competition area, billiards, darts and table tennis.
Horse-drawn sleigh rides are available throughout the winter; on Fridays, January through March, Friday-night sleigh rides are a tradition.
Visit the beautiful twelfth-century Benedictine abbey (photo above) at the edge of town. For more extensive touring, take the train for a tour of Lucerne and the four lakes area.
The Engelberg Talmuseum has been set up in the Wappenhaus. Visitors will get a good idea of what life is and was like in these high Alpine valleys.
Courses in trick skiing are offered (041-637-1074).
The most scenic local excursions other than the ride up the Titlisbahn, is a trip to Schwand, about five miles away, where from a vantage point above the church, you get the best view of the ring of mountains.
