Davos, Switzerland

Lodging

Davos hotels range from plush to plain. The following are our top recom-mendations in each category. The general location—Davos Dorf, Davos Platz an so on—is noted. Price ranges noted for each hotel are per person based on double occupancy high season with half board (breakfast and dinner): €€€—€125+; €€—€75–€125; €—less than €75.

Our recommended five-star hotels are:
Steigenberger Belvédère (081-415-6000, fax 081-415-6001; €€€; photo right). This is one of the grand old Alpine hotels in Davos-Platz. The view from the rooms facing the valley will beg for photography. Service cannot be topped anywhere else in town. The hotel restaurant, Romeo and Julia can be excellent and expensive. We enjoyed a superb medallions of reindeer on sautéed forest mushrooms, a Norwegian salmon appetizer was dinner-sized and the cranberry sorbet with fresh cranberries sublime. The indoor pool and spa, with steam and sauna, are very comforting. Complimentary transfers to the train station. In the U.S. call (800) 223-5652.

Hotel Fluela photo, Davos, SwitzerlandHotel Flüela (081-410-1717, fax 081-410-1718; €€€; photo left). A family-run hotel sits next to the Davos-Dorf station with easy access to all ski areas. A lounge with hardwood floors, comfy chairs and fireplace welcomes you, and the restaurant has beau-tifully painted ceilings. The rooms are all different.

Our recommended four-star hotels are:
Morosani Post Hotel (081-415-4500, fax 081-415-4501; €€€; photo below). This hotel in Davos Platz is especially popular with Swiss visitors, which speaks well of its quality, service and prices. Rooms are fur-nished in light pine and the interior is beautifully Alpine, even if the exterior appears cold and square.

Turmhotel Victoria (081-417-5300, fax 081-417-5380; €€€) was formerly the Hotel Cristiana. It re-opened in 1999 and is now a four-star hotel. In Davos-Dorf, it is a bit out of the way from nightlife and restaurants.

The Arabella Sheraton Hotel Seehof (081-417-9444, fax 081-417-9445; €€€), formerly the Hotel Seehof, is a renovated hotel in Davos Dorf next to the mountain railway and within walking distance of the train station.

Sporthotel Central (081-415-8200; €€€). An excellent hotel with pool and sauna in Davos-Platz. It has a cozy piano bar and lobby wth wireless Internet access.

Meierhof (081-416-8285, fax 081-416-3982; €€+). This is a hotel with a large Swiss clientele in Davos Dorf. The rooms are beautiful and the food exceptional.

Bahnhof Terminus (081-414-9797, fax: 081-414-9798) sits across from the Davos-Platz station and is the Jakobshorn base station.

Hotel Ochsen (081-415-4444, fax 081-415-4445; €) This hotel is rustic and in the center of the action with an excellent restaurant.

Hotel Edelweiss Davos (081-416-1033, fax 081-416-5191; €; photo below). B&B. A quaint hotel with private baths.

The Sports Center in the middle of town offers budget dormitory accommodations for €50–€58 a night with half-board.

The most popular, inexpensive snowboard lodgings are the Bolgenschanze, Snowboarder’s Palace, Bolgenhof and Guesthaus Suvretta near the Jacobshorn. Near the Rinerhorn most boarders stay at the RinerLodge.

Rental apartments are well organized and bookings can be arranged through the tourist office (see Tourist Information). Write and provide details—when you plan to arrive, how many people will be sharing the apartment and what facilities you desire. They will respond quickly with several choices. The reservations number is 081-415-2121.

It is more convenient to stay in Davos-Platz or Davos-Dorf—Davos-Laret and Davos-Wolfgang are further out of the way. Make your selection and notify the tourist office or the individual owner, depending on the instructions from the tourist office.

Normally, linen and kitchen utensils are included in every apartment. Taxes and cleaning may be extra. Expect to pay €20–€30 per person a night, depending on the number sharing the apartment, its location and its relative position on the luxury scale.
