Crans-Montana, Switzerland

Lodging

Crans-Montana can be very upscale. It doesn’t claim many movie stars or much of the old rich, but it is an oasis for the corporate rich. The town boasts more five-star hotels than any other Swiss resort except St. Moritz, and a dazzling selection of prize-winning, expensive restau-rants. Finding the ritziest isn’t difficult—digging for the good solid values for the middle-of-the-road crowd takes a bit more time. Rates are per person based on high season (February), double occupancy with half board: €€€—€125+; €€—€75–€125; €—less than €75.

Royal (027-485-9595, fax 027-485-9595; €€€; photo left) in Crans is the most luxurious on this side of town and offers the Ski Soleil program.

St-George (027-481-2414, fax 027-481-1670; €€€) is more of a three- than four- star hotel. It has an English-speaking staff and is popular with the British.

Mont-Blanc (027-481-3143, fax 027-481-3146; €€€) is high on the hill with great views. It's a favorite of English-speakers and has one of the top restaurants in town.

De la Forêt (027-480-2131, fax 027-481-3120; €€€; photo below) is a bit of a walk to the down-town area but close to Les Violettes lift. This hotel has a covered swimming pool.

The Best Western National (027-481-2681, fax 027-481-7381; €€€) is near the Crans lifts. It is used by British groups, but the owner can be cantankerous.

La Prairie (027-485-4141, fax 027-485-4142; €€€) is a rustic, chalet-type hotel a few minutes outside of town with a shuttle to the lifts. We rate it a low three-star.
