Lodging
The Chamonix reservation service (which also has listings for Argen-tière and Les Houches) is run by the tourist office, Place de LEglise, (450 53 23 33). Nearly 90 hotels provide a range of accommodations from luxury suites to dormitory-like rooms. Because of the many restaurants and snack bars, dont hesitate to book a hotel without a half-pension plan.
Rates are per person per day, based on double occupancy with half pension in February. €€€=€125+ ; €€=€75€124; €=less than €75.
Mont Blanc (450 53 05 64; €€€) A grand old hotel with renovated suites that offer upscale accommodations not found elsewhere in the town. The restaurant is one of the best in the region.
Auberge du Bois-Prin (450 53 33 51; €€€) A Chateau and Relais Hotel, this is
best in town for quiet and coziness but is a long walk uphill from the center of town. Rooms are decorated in dark wood with fixtures in brass and gold. The views of Mont Blanc from most rooms are spectacular, with Chamonix spread out below.
Hôtel du Jeu de Paume (450 54 03 76; €€€; photo above) Above the village of Le Lavancher, this hotel is understated, quiet luxury built in the wooden chalet style. It has an indoor/outdoor pool and well-appointed rooms.
Le Prieuré (450 53 20 72; €€€€€; photo below right) This is an excellent, functional hotel with some Alpine touches. It is large, short on quaintness and long on convenience. It also has a private shuttle to the ski areas, as well as covered parking.
Hôtel Savoyard (450 53 00 77; €€€€€) This small hotel is created with a French-country motif. It oozes charm and management is very helpful. It sits next to Le Brévant gondola, a steep climb from town. Great for skiing Le Brévent.
Hôtel des Aiglons (450 55 90 93; €€€€€) is modern with a beautiful, soaring lobby and great views of Mont Blanc. It is near the popular Restaurant Impossible.
Alpina (450 53 47 77; €€) This place could just as easily be a high-rise business hotel, but the views from the rooms across the valley to Mont Blanc are spectacular. It is in the center of town and the rooms are among the largest in town.
Sapinière Montana (450 53 07 63; €€) is only a five-minute walk from the center of town. Rooms are basic and slightly aging.
De la Croix Blanche (450 53 00 11; €€ ) Centrally located, this property has decades-old interiors that are nonetheless well maintained and pleasant. (B&B only).
La Vallée Blanche (450 53 04 50; €€) This freshly renovated small hotel is next to the churning river running through town and steps from Chamonixs center. Rooms feature beautiful, locally-made Alpine furniture. Breakfasts are a feast. Fills fast, so book early.

Apartments, condominiums, flats
Chamonix has hundreds of furnished chalets and apartments offered through several agencies. Prices for a studio with sleeping arrangements for two to four: €224€510. A two-room apartment housing six people will cost €368€1201. The tourist office provides direct booking. Call 450 53 23 33.
