Two beautiful areas have been designated for cross-country skiing: one in Argentière, the Foyer de ski de fond d'Argentière (450 541 422) at 1362, route dArgentière F-74400 Argentière; the second area starts in the center of Chamonix and extends to the village of Les Bois. The Foyer de ski de fond de Chamonix (450 531 115) is located at Route du Bouchet, F-74400 Chamonix Mont-Blanc.
A connecting trail through the small village of Le Lavancher (depending on snow conditions) makes it possible to go from one area to the other. Trails are open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The trails are groomed for both classic cross country skiing and skating techniques.
Argentière has three trails: the easy-rated 2.4 km Les Grassonnets trail the intermediate-rated 4 km: Les Chosalets trail; and the 9.3-km La Moraine trail which is rated difficult.
Chamonix has four trails in all. Le Bois du Bouchet has 3 km of easy terrain. The Orthaz is a 5.5 km intermediate trail. And Les Bois is 12.5 km of difficult trail. There's also a 6 km multi-activity trail for beginning cross country skiers and those with dogs.
Pedestrians are allowed only on the yellow-marked trails.
Dogs are allowed only on the pedestrian trails and in the multi-activity area.
There is a charge to use the trails which are regularly patrolled. The passes and tickets are on sale at the cross-country ski lodges of either Chamonix or Argentière. It costs €6.50 for an adult for a full day;€4 for a child for a full day. A week pass costs €28.
