Tucked in Italys far north along the craggy Swiss border, not too far from glitzy St. Moritz, above the vineyards of the temperate Valtellina, past spectacular Lago di Como lies Bormio.
This medieval town, which was orginally settled by the Romans, has been forgotten by most Italian guidebooks.
The middle-aged town center has a warren of narrow, cobble-stoned streets; Romanesque churches; crenulated guard towers; and frescoed stone houses. It has a pedestrian zone with small town shops, restaurants, markets and offices that are sur-rounded by busy streets that lead to the best hotels, restaurants and the lifts. And as if those things werent enticing enough, the entire town sits encircled by the majestic Alps with their world-class trails and facilities.
Here is the interactive Bormio town map.
Bormio has thrived for centuries because of its thermal waters discovered and developed first by the Etruscans and Romans and eventually enjoyed by succeeding civilizations. There is an ancient spa which has developed through Roman, Medieval and the Imperial eras. A new modern spa with the same thermal waters has been built in the town.
