Lodges are spread throughout the valley. This may appear inconvenient at first, but staying in such a beautiful valley is arguably a plus.

The most convenient place to stay for skiing is, of course, in Baqueira or in Tanau next to the slopes, but nightlife and restaurants are, for the most part, a drive away. Arties offers the best concentration of restaurants and nightlife and has exceptional hotels. Vielha has the valley’s largest pool and skating complex, excellent après-ski and restaurants but is short on late nightlife. Otherwise stay along the road linking Vielha and Baqueira. With a car, the valley facilities can be easily reached.

In the resort of Baqueira there are three hotels, all clustered at the base of the runs and the lifts. The most sought-after rooms are in the Val de Ruda (973-645258; €€), a small three-star hotel with heavy wood accents and lots of mountain atmosphere. The Tuc Blanc (973-644350; €€), a big modern hotel, is closest to the lifts with the only covered swimming pool in the village as well as a steamroom. It seems like Grand Central Station when the lifts close at the end of the day. Hotel Montarto (973-639001; €€) has rooms that are quite small by modern standards but the service is first class and you’ll have a short shuttle ride to the lifts or a 10-minute uphill walk. However, it is very convenient to the discos and the restaurants.

A small village of hotels and condos, Tanau has been built above Baquiera with a dedicated lift. Here, is the Hotel Melia Royal Tanau (973-644446; photo above; €€€) and its associated apartments with fine restaurant, gymnasium, spa, pool facilities, a lovely view of the ski station and a location steps from the Esquiro chair lift. The nearby Hotel Chalet Bassibe (973-645152; €€) has pool and sauna. Hotel La Pleta (973-645550; €€€) is in the same Tanau cluster, but about a 200 meter walk from the lift..

Parador Nacional Don Gaspar de Portola, Arties (973-640801; €€€) is a four-star parador (government-run country hotel). The town of Arties is the gourmet center of the valley, with some of Spain’s top restaurants. This parador has been completely renovated over the past three years.

Hotel Valarties (973-644364; €€) is the lodging arm of Restaurant Casa Irene. Half-board here means you dine on award-winning meals every day of the week.

Hotel Besiberri (973-640829; €€) tucked into the back of the village is tiny, comfortable and cozy.

Vielha, has come a long way in the past three years. The old town is being renovated and once-decrepit buildings house small restaurants and bars. The town now has two new four-star lodges — Hotel Sol Vielha (973-638000; €€) and Hotel Val d’Aran (973-643233; €€). We also recommend four smaller, recently renovated hotels tucked into the narrow streets of the old town only steps from good restaurants and packed tapas bars —Hotel Fonfreda (973-640486; €€) and Hotel Riu Nere (973-640150; €€), Hotel Ribaeta (973-642036; €) and Hotel Orla (973-642260; photo left; €).

Parador Nacional Valle de Arán, Vielha (973-640100; €€) is an impressive four-star hotel overlooking Vielha. Unfortunately, it is a long walk from the town.

Hotel HUSA Tuca (973-640700; €€) at the edge of Vielha is convenient to Vielha and 13 km. from the Baqueira slopes.

The Hotel de Tredos 973-644014; €€) has a cozy atmosphere and is just down from the ski village. In Salardù, other small family-run, atmospheric hotels are Hotel Lacreu (973-644222; € half-board only), Hotel Deth Pais (973-645836; €) and Hotel Mont Romies (973-645820; €). Garòs Ostau (973-642378; €€) is very rustic and very small with only eight rooms.

Baqueira/Beret has thousands of apartment beds. These places are small, built along the French style. We recommend two people take an apartment rated for four people and four sign up for a place for six in order to have enough space. The foldout couch counts as one of the normal sleeping places. For example, a one-bedroom unit, listed to fit four, costs €430–€520 (five-day rate in middle season with lifts tickets ), only €86–€104 per person per day based on only two people sharing the unit.

In Viehla, at the other end of the valley, the new Aparthotel Eth Refugi d’Aran (973-643002; €€) and Aparthotel La Vall Blanca (973-643024; €€) in Vielha offer half-board and breakfast-only packages. Aparthotel Eth Palai (973-343220; €) only has condos without meals. These properties are within an easy walk of the old town.
