Getting there:
Here is a larger, more detailed map.
This is not one of the easier spots on the earth to reach. There are no trains or planes. That means bus or rental car. The nearest airports are Toulouse in France 166 km. away, and San Sebastian and Barcelona in Spain, about 250 km. and 350 km. away respectively. From Toulouse take the autoroute west and exit at Montrejeau then follow signs to St. Beat and Val dArán. From Barcelona take the autopista to Lleida and then head north through Pont de Suert to Val dArán.
The bus ride between Vielha and Barcelona is about six hours with departures three times a day. It is not recommended.
The new Autoroute across southern France connecting Bayonne and the Mediterranean coast is also an excellent alternative to beating your way through the Spanish mountains. The airport in Biarritz or San Sebastian ends up being closer in driving time than Barcelona. The drive from Toulouse, France, is less than two hours.
Once in the valley, a car is the best way to move throughout the area. However, there is a bus system that links Baqueira and Veilha with buses heading to the resort hourly in the mornings and returning about every half hour starting from about 4 p.m. Tickets cost €0.85 per ride or €7 for 10 rides. Gas is cheaper in Spain than France.
