ST. ANTON (telephone prefix 05446)

After a day on the slopes, relax in the indoor pool, spa, whirlpool, and steamroom.

St. Antoner Hof (2910; fax 3551; €€€) is one of two five-star hotels in St. Anton. The hotel is away from the main downtown street, but close to the slopes and the new location of the train station.

Hotel Post (22130; fax 2343; €€€) Hardly need to leave this beautifully comfortable hotel in the center of town, with a deck for lunch, a choice of nightlife in the basement, and a redone health spa that offers progressive steam rooms and saunas. Very friendly and thorough service with a lovely restaurant.

Sporthotel (3111; fax 311170; €€€) In the pedestrian zone. Here you can arrange a week’s lodging, dance in the nightclub, and enjoy a steak in the restaurant. It also has an indoor swimming pool and sauna.

Hotel Mooserkreuz (2230; fax 3306; €€-€€€) On the edge of town. Sauna and indoor swimming pool, plus at the end of the day, you can ski back to the hotel.

Grieshof (2331; fax 202417; €€€) Located across the street from the Mössmer. This four-star hotel boasts an indoor swimming pool and friendly service.

Montjola (2302; fax 23029; €€€) A cozy lodge with excellent dining. About a five-minute walk (uphill) from the town center. The fondue capital of the Arlberg.

Hotel Fahrner (22360; fax 223622; €€-€€€) Another uphill climb from the village center, but a lovely, family-run inn with its own hand-constructed wine cellar and a traditional Austrian atmosphere.

Kertess (tel. 20050; fax 200656;€€€) This four-star establishment is a 10-minute walk from the town center and located in a quiet area. Excellent dining and quality service. Offers a shuttle bus. At the end of the day, ski right to the door. Sauna and massage available.

Hotel Pension Rendlhof (3100; fax 310050; €€€) This hotel has received rave reviews from readers. It is only minutes from the center of St. Anton and out of the range of the late-night singing as revelers stagger home.

Hotel Mössmer (2727; fax 272750; €) Off the pedestrian zone in an area that’s quiet and close to the action. Ask for a room in the recently added wing, and pay due homage to the Mössmers’ guard dog, Tino. B&B only.

Hotel Sailer (2673; 267310; €€) Affordable, homey and a local hang-out—a favorite haunt of ski instructors after a long day on the slopes. The rooms are utilitarian, but it’s a quick stroll to the lifts.

Zur Pfeffermuhle (3740; fax 37415; €€€) Among the most expensive in the neighborhood of St. Jakob, but still affordable compared to comparable hotels just a mile up the road in St. Anton proper. This four-star hotel offers spa facilities and is child friendly.

Hotel Tirolerhof (2448; fax 2915; €€) One of the larger establishments in quiet and quaint St. Jakob offering lots of activities.

Bellamonte (3137; 313720; ¤) and Haus Rosa (phone/fax 3252; €) both small and affordable B&B options. The neighborhood of St. Jakob has many.

ST. CHRISTOPH (telephone prefix 05446)
Arlberg-Hospiz (2611; fax 3773; €€€) The most exclusive spot on this side of the Arlberg. The restaurant is one of Austria’s best with a world-famous wine cellar. The five-star hotel has a top-notch spa with indoor swimming pool and fitness center. Newly renovated on-slope apartments with all amenities are also ideal for families; a breakfast room in the facility serves a generous buffet assortment daily.

LECH (telephone prefix 05583)
Hotels in exclusive locations shift around in terms of which one gathers the celebrities and which one slips a bit in the gossip sheets.

The top hotel in Lech these days is the Hotel Arlberg (21340; fax 2134–25; €€€) which is conveniently located and oozing old elegance. This five star hotel was where Princess Diana used to stay. The lobby recreates an old hunting lodge and log fires crackle in front of overstuffed couches and chairs.

Gasthof Post (22060; fax 2206–23; €€€) A Relais & Chateaux five-star hotel which attracts a slightly older upscale crowd and is beautiful and cozy. Once actually the post office in Lech, this hotel still has its stuccoed-and-painted facade and is filled with antiques. It is worth a visit, if only to soak up the old money atmosphere, to at least stop in and have a drink at the bar.

Goldener Berg (22050; fax 250513) This four-star sport hotel in Oberlech features a Kiddy Club with activities for children from ages three and up. The service is free. The hotel is known for its gourmet cuisine and famous wine cellar. A new spa offers such niceties as a swimming pool, steam bath, Finnish sauna and organic sauna. A mud pack treatment features local ingredients.

Angela (2407; fax 240715; €€€) is beautifully appointed and ideally positioned—a real ski-in/ski-out spot with plenty of solitude in Lech. Supervised children's program in the afternoons and evenings.

Burg Hotel (22910; fax. 229112; €€€) Top quality with sauna, whirlpool and tennis. It is only steps from the cable-car station and is a center of aprés-ski action in Oberlech.

Krone (2551; fax 255181; €€€) An European Romantic Hotel with every modern amenity and with an award-winning restaurant; its sauna and pool overlook the ski slopes. It still looks much the way it did 100 years ago. The rugged chalet building is set between the church and the river.

Kristiania (2561; fax 3550; €€€) A bit out of the mainstream, but nice, this hotel is owned by the 1952 Olympian Othmar Schneider. The hotel is a member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World. The family's private art collection appears throughout the hotel and greatly adds to the ambience.

Sonnenburg (2147; €€€) in Oberlech, is made up of twin chalets with the traditional wood/stucco facade. The terrace overlooking Lech below is a hot spot for tea-time aprés-ski. The wellness center features a pool, fitness room, and separate saunas for men and women! There is childcare for children younger than age four.

Haldenhof (24440; fax. 244421; €€–€€€) A friendly, family-owned and family-run hotel—the perfect Austrian inn with delicious traditional cuisine.

Alpensport Hotel Lech (22890, fax 2727; €€) and Pension Chesa Rosa (22890; fax 2727; €€€) are two of the more popular guest houses.

Kristall (2422; fax 24223; €€€) is behind the church; an ideal location for beginner skiers. Friendly service.

Pension Sursilva (2970; fax 31760; €€€) Good value and modern facilities.

Just outside Lech, in Zug, Gasthof Rote Wand (3435; fax 343540; €€€) has a traditional atmosphere with a heavy wood interior and many antiques. It has an indoor pool, health club, sauna, etc. There's also a children's playroom and babysitting service.

The tiny Gasthof Alpenblick (2755; fax 27668€) is a real family bargain in Zug, near the Rote Wand and the special family area.

This is the hotel that made the tiny village famous. It is a series of five chalets joined together and filled with the ultimate in Tyrolean luxury. Wood paneling surrounds you and oriental carpets cover the floors.

The four-star Albona Nova (2341; fax 234112; €€€) is tucked round the back, away from the road and right by a lift. This charming and splendid hotel has carved-wood ceilings and an intimate appeal. German-speaking critics have called it “Klein und fein.” That translates to small and fine. The restaurant is fabulous.

Arlberghaus (2258; fax 225855; €€€), which has good Italian dining, and the Schweizerhaus (2463; fax 42128; €€) are some of the less expensive (Bed & Breakfast or Half Board only).

Stuben (telephone prefix 05582)
Post Hotel (761; fax 7626; €€) A good choice for uncomplicated skiing with on-site ski rental, ski school and a bank.

Haus Erzberg (tel. 520; fax 7294; €) Small hotel (13 beds), B&B only.

Ski-Hotel Mondschein (tel. 511; fax 736; €€€) Excellent hotel in historic 1739 building. Indoor pool, friendly atmosphere.

Apartments, dondominiums, flats
If you want to rent a vacation apartment, ask for the apartment listing brochure from each of the tourist offices in the Arlberg. They maintain a complete list of hundreds of apartments and chalets available in season.

In Lech, apartments can be rented with four beds for about €150 a day, high season. In St. Anton, a four-bed apartment can be rented for about €160 a day. These prices are about average.
